Whitewashing Gay History
So far in 2012: Washington and Maryland have legalized gay marriage. New Jersey’s state government passed gay marriage, only to have it vetoed by the governor. The 9th circuit court of California overturned Proposition 8, reiterating what the lower courts have already declared, that a ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional.
These small victories may give us a boost of confidence, a rejuvenated sense of optimism and hope for the future of gay rights in the United States. However, we must not forget, or whitewash, the injustices committed against our community throughout gay history. Many of the people standing up for gay rights today, not too long ago vigorously fought against us.
We have far to go, people. When you feel like you’re losing sight of the real picture, just take a look back at our history.
